Later this spring, we'll also start an operational evaluation of space-based ADS-B in the
Caribbean using our En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM) platform.
Since the equipage deadline passed, we have had more than 75,000 ADS-B equipped
flight segments in the NAS daily. In contrast, we're getting about 150 requests for
authorizations per day from aircraft that aren't equipped. We're working through those,
and pleased with the tool that processes those service requests – ADS-B Deviation
Authorization Pre-Flight Tool, or ADAPT.
I was glad to get a chance to see some of these and other advanced technologies in
use this week when I visited members of our team at the New York ARTCC (ZNY).
I was there for a special event to honor women in aviation by having an all-female crew
of air traffic controllers – including the air traffic manager and operations manager –
staff the oceanic area of the facility. The idea came from Linda Waters, who is retiring
after 35 years with the FAA this month, and Air Traffic Manager Tia Moore helped make
it happen. Congratulations!
It was a thrill to see that we've come a long way in diversity, and it's also a reminder that
we still have much room to improve in that arena as well. You can hear more about it in
