The pilot's anxiety heightened the challenge, as he
unknowingly transmitted over a hot microphone,
pleading with the failing engine while shouting
in frustration and fear. The transmission was a
reminder that the person on the other end of
the frequency was experiencing one of the worst
moments of his life. That emotion can become
contagious in many instances. Not in this case for
Rodriguez Santander.
Instead of allowing the pilot's panic to
influence his own performance, Rodriguez
Santander focused on something remarkably
simple: reminding himself to remain calm.
Staying composed meant he could give the
pilot clear, confident instructions.
Rodriguez Santander later said he was especially
mindful of speaking slowly and clearly because
he speaks with an accent. In an emergency,
repeating instructions costs valuable time. His
goal was simple: Say it once, say it clearly.
The aircraft safely landed at HWO, bringing a
successful conclusion to what could have ended
very differently.
Emergencies often highlight the technical skills
of air traffic controllers, but they also reveal the
ability to remain composed when everything
around them is not. Rodriguez Santander
demonstrated that professionalism isn't
simply knowing the right procedures — it is
controlling your own emotions and providing
a calm, confident presence when a pilot needs
it most.
