ISSUE: STAFFING CONCERNS
The math is simple. We have more controllers eligible to retire than are currently in the
pipeline to become air traffic controllers. If the current staffing situation continues
unchecked, the NAS will see an increased number of inadequately staffed facilities. Some
are critically staffed already. This will lead to longer hours, more work days (overtime), and
less leave, all of which could contribute to unacceptable levels of fatigue.
QUICK REFERENCE
HOW THIS ISSUE AFFECTS
NATCA MEMBERS:
Neglecting staffing affects the safety and the
efficiency of the system in both the near and
long term.
Sequestration forced the FAA to institute a hiring freeze
and shuer the FAA training academy between March
2013 and December 2013. Even maximum hiring in 2015
and 2016 will not make up for the arition seen in 2013
through 2016.
Fully staffing our system is a top priority. This
requires resources for hiring, training, and
employee placement.
