NextGen Now | Summer 2015
Implementing space-based ADS-B will further
harmonization efforts and is consistent with
where ICAO wants to go. If foreign air navigation
service providers who control airspace next to
ours develop the capability for oceanic ADS-B
and we don't, it will increase workload and
potential sources of confusion for both pilots and
controllers. We already operate in the largest,
most complex airspace in the world; we don't
need to introduce more variables into the mix.
Now's the time to invest in the aviation
infrastructure by expanding our reach to skies
above both land and sea. ALPA stands ready,
as always, to make these modernization plans a
reality — not an ocean of uncertainty.
We've asked Administrator Huerta to make it a
priority because adding more safety measures
to the U.S. aviation system — already the gold
standard in the world — is always a top priority
for our union. I know it's a value we share with
NATCA, and every air traffic controller.
On Our Radar: ALPA's Air Safety Forum
Please join us at the upcoming ALPA Air Safety
Forum, July 22–23, 2015, at the Washington Hilton,
where you can learn more about the aviation safety
and security issues on our radar. Similar to your
Communicating for Safety conference, we'll discuss
NextGen on the opening day of the forum and hear
from keynote speakers such as Congressman
Peter DeFazio, ranking member of the House
Transportation and Infrastructure Committee,
and Ambassador Cofer Black, the director of
the CIA Counterterrorist Center during 9/11. On
Thursday night, we'll also present awards to our
esteemed airline pilot representatives, including
the recognition of a flight crew who experienced
extraordinary events while performing their duties.
