WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM ATO COO TERI L. BRISTOL The Push for 'Greener' Facilities Hi everyone. Like you, I take great pride in our mission to ensure the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world. I'm also min dful of the need to be good environmental stewards. In the ATO, we're taking steps to make our facilities greener. We have two new, soon - to - be - commissioned air traffic control towers that have been designed to meet the strict sustainability standards of th e U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED). LEED is a green building certification program that recognizes best - in - class building strategies and practices and provides a framework for creating healthy, resource - effic ient, and cost - effective buildings. The new South Tower at Chicago O'Hare was built to achieve LEED Gold status, one of the best rankings under this framework. The base building has a roof garden with native plants that reduces the temperature of the build ing, thereby reducing the amount of air conditioning needed. The entire facility also relies on a geothermal heat exchange, which reduces the building's power demand during all - weather conditions.
