WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM ATO COO TERI L. BRISTOL
The Three T's of NextGen
Hi everyone. Over the past couple of years, we've made great progress toward
building NextGen's foundation and working with industry to identify near - term NextGen
priorities. We're in a position to leverage these accomplishments and move ahead with
more advanced NextGen capabilities that will continue to transform the way our nation
flies. Today, I want to talk about three of these capabilities.
We call them our three T's: Time Based Flow Management (TBFM), Traffic Flow
Management System (TFMS), and Terminal Flight Data Manager (TFDM). These are
decision support programs that provide controllers with timely information to more
efficiently manage traffic.
Time Based Flow Management supports our priority to increase the availability
and use of performance based navigation (PBN). TBFM uses time instead of distance to
help controllers separate air traffic, which results in more efficient metering, saving time
and reducing fuel burn and emissions. We have it deployed at 20 en route cente rs, 30
TRACONS, and 37 towers.
We've started enhancing TBFM with the Ground Based Interval Management -
Spacing (GIM - S) tool, which enables us to line planes up from further away so they can
take more advantage of fuel efficient Optimized Profile Descents (O PD's). In fact,
because of TBFM and GIM - S, OPD operations into Phoenix International airport are now
routine. GIM - S is in use at Albuquerque and Denver en route centers, and deployment is
