'It is often easy to lose yourself in the current labor dispute between
NATCA and the FAA, but as a Regional Vice President, I am exposed to the great things
controllers do to protect the profession and fight for what is right. The Archie League
Awards, what they stand for, and the professional air traffic controllers being honored
here remind me of why we are here. We are air traffic controllers.
"As with any air traffic controller, sometimes you are required to do more than anyone
should be expected to do. In the situation involving James Kmetz, his actions that day are
a true example of what it means to be an air traffic controller. He was able to calmly
point out obstacles while directing a pilot through the central Indiana skies. His knowl-
edge of the area and ability to point out landmarks helped the pilot as he struggled to fly
his aircraft. I could not be more proud of James, and his actions, in this time of crisis."
