'Most pilots are taught to be aware of the accumulation of ice on the wings
of an aircraft. The wing is specifically designed for maximum "lift" and since ice effective-
ly changes the shape of the wing, encountering icing conditions will obviously interfere
with the pilot's primary goal of remaining airborne.
"The pilot of Cessna 666CA was on initial descent into a St. Louis suburban airport when
he encountered icing conditions that interfered with the control of his aircraft. Over the
course of the next two hours, air traffic controllers Jack Bowers and David Brown direct-
ed, informed and reassured the pilot through numerous approaches and landing attempts
at multiple airports.
"The knowledge, skill, abilities, demeanor and professionalism of Jack and David were
crucial to an eventual safe landing. Jack is also a certified flight instructor which most
certainly added to his effectiveness. I am extremely proud of these two controllers, but I
am sure they would call it, 'just another day's work.'"
