NiW Today n i w . n a t c a . n e t WORKSHOPS Q HATCH ACT COLUMBIA B • 11:00 am Instructor: Erica Hamrick, Deputy Chief of the Hatch Act Unit in the Office of Special Counsel Presentation on the basics of the Hatch Act, presented by the Office of Special Counsel. This class will cover the do's and don'ts regarding political activity for us as federal employees, including the potential hazards of social media. Why should I attend? The Office of Special Counsel, which is responsible for enforcing the Hatch Act, will be presenting this class. In today's environment with federal elections right around the corner, activists will get a thorough understanding of the do's and don'ts as it relates to the Hatch Act and how violating the Hatch Act may affect their job. Q CONGRESS 101: STRUCTURE REGENCY FOYER • 9:00 am / 10:00 am Instructors: Allie Valocchi, NATCA Senior Political and Legislative Representative Richard Kennington, Northwest Mountain Region Legislative Committee Chairman, NLC Member This workshop covers the basic structures of the House and Senate. Participants will gain a better understanding of government leadership and the work of congressional committees, including those that are important to NATCA. Why should I attend? First timers or experienced legislative activists can learn something from this class. In order to be a truly effective activist, you must understand how Congress is structured and how Congress works. This class will give you those basics. Q FACILIT Y AND STATE COORDINATOR TRAINING REGENCY B • 10:00 am / 11:00 am Instructors: James Decker, California State Coordinator, Los Angeles Center Andre Jean, NLC Member, New England Region This workshop is designed for any current Facility Legislative Representative/State Coordinator and anyone who might be interested in one of those positions. Why should I attend? If you are a current NATCA Facility Legislative/State Coordinator or have aspirations of becoming one, we encourage you to attend this workshop where you will learn the duties and responsibilities expected of these positions. Q BEYOND NATCA IN WASHINGTON COLUMBIA A • 9:00 am / 11:00 am Instructors: Grant Anderson, Former State Coordinator, NLC member, and NATCA Academy instructor Trisha Pesiri-Dybvik, NLC Member, Western Pacific Region This class will focus on strategies for staying legislatively active all year and inspiring others members to get active as well. Why should I attend? Are you interested in becoming more legislatively active? Do you feel legislatively motivated after NATCA in Washington, but then that momentum decreases as time passes? This class will identify ways to stay motivated and active all year long. Q CONGRESS 102: PROCESS REGENCY C • 10:00 am / 11:00 am Instructors: Allie Valocchi, NATCA Senior Political and Legislative Representative John Bressler, NATCA Deputy Director of Government Affairs Learn how legislation moves through Congress – from introduction, through pertinent committees, a floor vote, and, ultimately, passage or defeat. Why should I attend? Activists should take this class after attending Congress 101. Congress 102 will go into detail about how a bill is introduced and the hurdles it must overcome to reach passage as a law. 6
