Once you turn age 62, you are eligible for benefits to be paid by Social Security (SS) based on your lifeti me wages — defined as 40 working ye ars. For example, age 22 - to - 62. SS will then drop the lowest five years from the benefit calculation. The highest 35 years of wages where SS was paid is then used to determine your 100 percent full benefit. This is the be nefit you are due at full retirement age (FRA). FRA was set at age 65 until 1983 when Congress passed a law gradually increasing the FRA. Persons turning 62 between 2005 and 2016 are eligible at age 62 for a SS benefit that is 75 percent of their full bene fit. Those born between 1955 and 1960 will now experience a five percent increased benefit reduction at age 62 from 25 percent to 30 percent. Persons born in 1960 that apply for a reduced retirement benefit at age 62 will receive 70 percent of their FRA be nefit — their 100 percent benefit is now payable at age 67.
