NATCA'S SBS REP FEATURED IN AOPA STORY ABOUT ADS-B
AOPA.org's Jim Moore interviewed NATCA Surveillance and Broadcast Services
(SBS) Rep Eric Labardini for a story that was published last week about the benefits of
Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Out equipment for general
aviation pilots and the importance of the Jan. 1, 2020 deadline for ADS-B equipage.
Excerpt from the story:
Labardini also noted that improved ADS-B infrastructure not only serves
helicopters flying to and from oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, it also has improved
efficiency at Houma-Terrebonne Airport in Houma, Louisiana, where many of those
helicopters are based.
"This has led to a definite improvement in the efficient flow in and out of this
airport," Labardini said. "To get the full benefits that are available today, and save some
fuel, equipping with ADS-B is critical from where I sit."
Another benefit for those who equip could prove a life-saver. Labardini said
controllers often lose radar contact with a descending aircraft in an emergency, and
ADS-B will allow them to offer vectors and assistance much lower; it also gives rescuers
a significant head start on locating a stricken aircraft.

BRINGING THE NEWS TO YOU – A KEY IMPROVEMENT TO OUR DISTRIBUTION
OF WEEKLY NATIONAL OFFICE UPDATES AND PAUL AND TRISH TEAM
UPDATES
In order to best communicate with NATCA's membership, the NATCA
Communications Department is changing the way it distributes the Paul and Trish Team
Update and the National Office Departmental Week in Review.
The department is now sending these updates to every member of NATCA via a
Constant Contact e-newsletter. Every member will have the option to unsubscribe from
receiving these updates. This change will help us maximize our technological resources
to ensure we are reaching the list of active, current members who have opted to receive
the updates. This ensures the department is sending the updates to the most current list
of members who want to receive them.
We are proud and excited to implement this change in the way we communicate
with the NATCA membership in order to continue providing you with the high level of
service to which you are accustomed. Please let us know if you have any questions or
feedback.
THE STAFFING CRISIS
June 15 House Aviation Subcommittee Hearing, Including NATCA
President Paul Rinaldi: Rinaldi described current staffing levels as a "crisis" that puts
the status of the largest, safest, most efficient, most complex, most diverse airspace
system in the world at risk. He said that staffing is one of the most critical problems
facing the NAS.
"Further staffing reductions could have an immediate detrimental effect on
capacity, meaning fewer planes in the sky and greater potential for delays," said Rinaldi.
"Likewise, the FAA would continue to fall further behind in its development, testing,
deployment and training for NextGen modernization programs, procedures, and
equipment."
