If you have a divorce in your history, do you know the complete procedure you'll need to follow in order to get any owed TSP funds paid out correctly? What about your retirement paperwork? Do you know what needs to be s ent to OPM so you can retire without a hitch? If you've been divorced, there are two distinct scenarios where you'll need clear and complete paperwork in order to move on successfully. First, if your former spouse has been awarded a portion of your TSP but agreed not to touch your pension, you need to submit a copy of your court - approved divorce decree to the TSP as soon as possible — anytime in your career. This will make sure TSP knows how much needs to be distributed and who is to receive it. Then TSP ca n get those funds distributed to your former spouse and you can go on with your career. If your former spouse also has a claim to a portion of your FERS or CSRS pension, you will need an additional document called a Qualified Domestic Relations Order or QD RO. The QDRO should be submitted to OPM's Court Orders branch as soon as possible by trackable mail. OPM will then communicate with you and your attorney to clarify how your pension will be split. Obviously, it is highly recommended that you use a qualifie d divorce attorney who understands the Federal regulations.
