Integrated Display System Replacement (IDS - R) OSHA VOR Minimum Operating Network (MON) LABOR RELATIONS DEPARTMENT FAA BRIEFING ON TASAR On Sept . 20, 2016, the FAA and NASA briefed NATCA abou t NASA's TASAR Flight Trial - 2. TASAR is a software program that is intended to provide real - time operational information to allow pilots to make precise altitude and route change requests based on wea ther, turbulence, and traffic. Since 2013, NASA has been conducting limited testing with Alaska Airlines and Virgin America aircraft that have been equip ped with TASAR software. Their testing was primarily concerned with pilot and crew workload, and placed very little emph asis on the controller impact. NASA believes the requests, which were approved the majority of the time, led to significant fuel and ti me savings for the airlines. Alaska Airlines will have three aircraft equipped and operational betwe en January and September 2017. One Virgin aircraft will be equipped beginning in the spring of 2017 until May 2018. Thus a total of four aircraft and only l imited trained crew and pilots will be using TASAR in the ai rspace until at least May 2018.
