WEEKLY UPDATE FROM FAA ATO COO TERI BRISTOL
Correcting Hazards in the NAS
Hi everyone. The ATO's Top 5 Hazard List is a powerful illustration of our Collect, Find ,
and Fix approach to proactively address safety risk. On the FY17 list, we're tackling
hazards involving close encounters between IFR and VFR aircraft , NOTAM issuance
and cancellation, NOTAM prioritization and filtering, runway flyovers, and aircraft landing
on the wrong runway, on a taxiway, or at the wrong airport. We've already completed 10
of t he 29 corrective actions developed for these list items.
I'll give you an example of a corrective action we've completed for NOTAM issuance and
cancellation. When there is an equipment malfunction at an airport, such as for glide
slopes, Precision Approac h Path Indicators, Runway Status Lights , and similar kinds of
equipment, a NOTAM has to be issued to let pilots know about it.
