WEEKLY UPDATE FROM FAA ATO COO TERI BRISTOL
Collaborating for Success in Philadelphia
As air traffic professionals, we have a special relationship with the weather. Everything
we do to provide safe and efficient air traffic services is dependent on optimal visibility,
wind, surface conditions and a variety of other observable meteorological
phenomena. In FY16 alone, two-thirds of all reportable delays were attributed to
weather.
We can't control wind speed and direction, cloud cover or fog, but we can control how
we adapt our operation to maintain separation and enhance efficiency during weather
events. And that is exactly what happened in Philadelphia, when members of local
management and support teams, Technical Operations, NATCA Article 114 workgroups,
the airport authority and local airlines formed a group to address the problem.
This video describes the group's process by which they designed and implemented two
new comprehensive arrival configuration projects, delivering benefits to the airport
authority, the airlines, and the city of Philadelphia. Their work is a great example of what
can be achieved when technology and innovative thinking are combined.
