NATCA MEMBERS SHINE DURING ECLIPSE
Air traffic facilities across the Na tional Airspace System (NAS) experienced an increase
in air traffic operations during the solar eclipse on Monday, Aug. 21. It was the first total
solar eclipse in the U.S. since 1979 and the first time in 99 years that a total solar eclipse
crossed the co untry. It inspired massive interest from the aviation and space
communities that resulted in heavier than usual traffic, especially at airports near the 100
percent totality areas.
We were thrilled to be able to capture the great work of our members in a detailed
feature that we ran in the NATCA Insider last week – in the Sept. 1 issue. ICYMI, here is
the link to read the story and view some of t he incredible images of the traffic that our
members worked in many facilities.
NATCA FIGHTING TO PROTECT MEMBERS' RETIREMENT BENEFITS
Nearly one - third of our FAA - employed controllers are currently eligible to retire - and
they ' re likely to retire earlie r than anticipated in order to avoid harmful cuts to retirement
benefits, such as those proposed in the House Budget Resolution . The exodus of retiring
controllers would be detrimental to the National Airspace System.
Many of our members last week continued to host members of Congress and their s taffs
during facility tours that have taken place over this current congressional recess. We
chronicled many of those visits in the NATCA Insider last week . Read more .
