U.S. SENATE Senate Commerce has jurisdiction over aviation and is responsible for drafting the legislation that reauthorizes FAA programs. In order to avoid a lapse in authorization on September 30, the Senate must either take up H.R. 4 or pass its own FAA reauthorization bill, which would have to be "conferenced" with H.R. 4 to resolve any differences before being signed into law by the president. The subcommittee lays the groundwork for FAA reauthorization by working with the aviation industry and stakeholders to analyze the best ways to modernize the NAS.
