COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT STAT OF THE WEEK The FAA planned to hire 1,619 in Fiscal Year 2016 for air traffic controller positions. The Agency actually hired 1,680. HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK – MEDIA TRAINING On Nov. 10, NATCA's Senior Communications and Public Affairs Associate Sarah McCann and Communications Director Doug Church hosted the fifth NATCA media training at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Attendees were able to learn directly from NATCA's Communications staff, McCann and Church, as well as media experts Jeff Birnbaum, President of BGR Public Relations, and Jo Maney, Vice President of BGR Public Relations, during a panel on managing the media. NATCA President Paul Rinaldi and Executive Vice President Trish Gilbert also attended the training and opened up the class. The panel focused on best practices for interacting with members of the press, guidance on building relationships with members of the media, what NATCA's media policy is, why it exists and why it is important to follow it. Panelists also discussed the importance of utilizing the NATCA's Communications Department and how they help NATCA's membership maintain the integrity and credibility of NATCA's reputation in the public eye. The panel and discussion about how to control an interview are conversational, so that all in attendance can participate, in order to provide the best atmosphere. ELECTION RESULTS – PRESS RELEASE We issued this statement on Nov. 9: NATCA President Paul Rinaldi and Executive Vice President Trish Gilbert issued the following joint statement on the results of the presidential election: "We congratulate President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence on their victory." It provides 11.8 million jobs and creates $1.5 trillion in total economic activity, contributing over five percent to the United States Gross Domestic Product. We look forward to working with the new Administration to secure a stable, predictable funding stream for the NAS. This will be essential to protecting the system and the workforce that safeguards it, while also implementing modernization efforts and providing air travelers the safety and professionalism they deserve." "We also look forward to working with the new Administration to further advance the tremendously successful collaborative relationship we've built with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Transportation over the last eight years, which has yielded positive results for the American people."
