that this will be taking place in the Senate, not in the House where the Holman Rule is in effect. That being said, we will be just as vigilant in sc rubbing any amendments that would impact the NATCA membership. Stay tuned for updates. HEARING FOR DOT NOMINEE ELAINE CHAO During the week of Jan. 9, the Senate has been holding several Cabinet confirmation hearings for President - Elect Donald Trump's nom inees. On Wednesday, Jan . 11, the Senate Commerce Committee held a nomination hearing for President - Elect Trump's nomination to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Elaine Chao. Chao served as the head of the Labor Department during the George W. Bush administration, and she also had experience at DOT as deputy secretary. The hearing allowed a close examination of Chao and provide d an opportunity for s enators on the committee to ask her questions about her current positions on transportation issues. GA staff was in attendance and worked with committee and personal staff leading up to the hearing. (Please s ee next week's National Office Departmental Week in Review for details about the hearing.) Background : Once a President or President - Elect makes a nom ination to the Executive Branch, the nomination is then considered by the Senate committee with jurisdiction over the appointed position. In this case, Elaine Chao testified before the Senate Commerce Committee. Once the committee holds a hearing, a vote w ill be taken on whether to report the nomination of Chao to the Senate favorably, unfavorably, or without recommendation. ANTI - FEDERAL EMPLOYEE BILLS As a reminder, as the new Congress ramps up, we are already hearing of anti - federal employee bills. With a Republican House, Senate, and White House, the number of proposals that would negatively impact federal employees will rise. We are definitely expecting this to be an anti - federal employee year, when it comes to the introduction of legislation. Just as an example, last September, Rep. Rokita (R - IN) introduced H.R. 6278, the Promote Accountability and Government Efficiency Act. This bill would reform due process and official time. The bill did not gain any traction last year, but it is expected to be re - i ntroduced for consideration by the new Republican - led Congress. GA staff has been and will continue preparing to fight these proposals, and we will be working with you all closely throughout the process.
