July meeting and is pending a date to reconvene to complete the evaluation. It is not clear what will come out of the panel, but it is expected that an increase in the protection of the critical area during CAT II and III operations is likely, and possibly CAT I, a clearly defined vertical component to the area. Approach/Departure Hold Areas - Airports held a SRMP on changing the dimensions of the Departure Obstacle Clearance Area. The departure area by definition was reduced but is likely to impact more airports as the areas have not been widely implanted and evaluated. The Approach Hold Area could have a significant impact to airports and arrival operations. The Approach area is increasing in size and will affect more surface on the airport. Airports has not produced any real examples of how or where the new areas will be. They state they cannot give any examples until the evaluations happen in 2020. A change to the .65 for how aircraft are handled in and around the newly-protected areas is out. Most significantly, the Approach Hold surface will have to be vacated prior to an arriving aircraft reaching a two-mile final. If the arriving aircraft reaches a two-mile final and the Approach Surface area is occupied, the arriving aircraft will have to be sent around. Use of Colors on ATC Displays - The initial direction of restriction four colors on the STARS display was scrapped and is headed in a more flexible direction.
